ZONE 4 – ROUTE 8
The Route
VARENNA WITCHES’ WOOD AND VEZIO CASTLE
MTB trail accessible to a reasonable level of physical preparation, starting and finishing from the Varenna train station or pier.
Following the track, you take the asphalt road that goes up towards Esino Lario; after about 3 km you turn off for Gittana where a beautiful view opens up on the Como branch, with Bellagio in the foreground.
Subsequently, turning right, you enter the first stretch of dirt road, mainly downhill, called “Bosco delle Streghe”.
We then return to the main road towards Esino Lario, where, along the road, there is a fantastic viewpoint over the two branches of the lake, with the Vezio Castle, the next destination on the route, in the foreground and Comacina Island in the background.
We descend to the town of Perledo, to head towards Vezio and its castle of the same name.
Pay attention to possible pedestrians in the small streets that make up the village.
Finally, we retrace a short stretch to return to the path that leads to Varenna, along a winding staircase.
We continue towards Sommafiume, another town inhabited by holidaymakers in the summer.
Heading towards the locality of Vezzée, you descend along a fairly wide and fun agro-forestry pastoral road; it is advisable to pay attention only to a passage near the river, where it is advisable to accompany the bike by hand.
Another suggestive passage is from the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Bondo, along the last descent, also passing by the water collection basin for the power plant located on the lake shore.
Finally, we proceed on asphalt; if you want and without any particular problems, you can make easily identifiable cuts to reach Dervio.
